SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.12 g, 3 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair drawn up at the back and wearing pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer - (V66/R-). HGC 2, 1306. SNG ANS 42. Beautifully toned and with a fine head of Arethousa. A few light scratches and with minor traces of overstriking (?) on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of the German Art Historian Dr. Tjark Hausmann, privately acquired from Münzengalerie Dieter Grunow between 1992 and 2003 (with dealer's ticket).
